How biotech talent trends have shifted in 2026
01 Jun, 20263 minute read
The 2026 life sciences market has been considered ‘cautiously optimistic’. Following the post-COVID turbulence of 2023-2024, where funding dried up and countless biotechs ran out of capital, we are finally entering a period of growth and stabilization after drastically difficult times.
This isn’t to say that we are experiencing a repeat 2021, which saw an unprecedented surge in biopharma and biotech investments during the pandemic. So far, it appears that the industry is transitioning – with job postings on the rise despite the wave of layoffs that took place last year.
Below we’ve outlined four talent trends that have emerged over this year and what you can expect from the market if you’re looking for your next biotech opportunity.
1. The market is getting better, gradually
So far, the biotech talent market has improved compared to recent years, but its recovery is slow and uneven across different sectors.
After the hiring surge of 2020-2021 that took place during the pandemic, the market shifted entirely between 2022-2024. Companies faced dramatic funding cuts and restructuring while candidates struggled with layoffs and a cautious hiring environment that wasn’t working in their favor.
After several years of turbulence, hiring is beginning to pick up again. We are not, however, returning to the height of the pandemic. Instead, biotech organizations are taking an efficiency-focused approach where they are looking for high-value candidates with broader skill sets and proven experience.
It’s getting better, but the market remains competitive.
2. Lab skills alone may not be enough
While technical lab expertise is essential for biotech candidates, it may no longer be enough in today’s market.
The growing adoption of AI and automation across all the life sciences sectors is fundamentally changing how research and development is being conducted. This new tech allows teams to work quicker and more efficiently, improving overall success rates.
Because of this shift, companies are beginning to look for talent that is tech-savvy as well as knowledgeable in science. If you’re looking to stand out in the talent pool, it may be worth improving your awareness of AI and upskilling – especially as 51% of biopharma leaders are now prioritizing AI-related roles.
3. Hybrid has become the new norm
Since the world experimented with remote working during the pandemic, it’s becoming increasingly clear that, while fully remote biopharma positions rarely work, a blend of lab and home working has become the norm.
To gain access to top-tier talent, companies are hiring more hybrid and flexible roles that better align with what today’s workforce values. Recent research found that 60% of employees in the US prefer hybrid/flexible work arrangements – while our own LinkedIn poll found that 33% of life sciences professionals rank work-life balance as their top priority when considering their next career move.

This trends also means that companies are no longer restricted to hiring in expensive biotech hubs such as San Francisco, Boston, London, Oxford or San Diego. With geographic barriers expanding, more great talent is on offer than ever before – which for candidates also means greater competition.
4. Talent shortages despite last year’s layoffs
Although layoffs across biotech and pharma increased throughout 2025, the market remains highly competitive, particularly in mid-to-senior level positions.
While there are more experienced professionals actively searching for opportunities, companies are becoming far more selective in the talent they hire. Many organizations are reducing broader generalist positions while prioritizing candidates with highly niche technical expertise and specialist industry knowledge.
At the same time, an aging workforce is continuing to create long-term demand across the sector, with approximately 40% of employees in pharma and biotech now over the age of 50.
For candidates, this means that, although competition for opportunities has intensified, professionals with specialist experience and in-demand skill sets are still highly sought after.
