Five key takeaways: OUTBio Bay Area x Meet Life Sciences career development panel
31 Mar, 20263 minutes
Earlier this month, we had the pleasure of hosting the OUTBio Bay Area LGBTQ+ Career Development Panel in our San Francisco office.. The room was full of LGBTQ+ professionals from across the life sciences community, all coming together to learn from one another, share stories, and offer support.
We were grateful to welcome an incredible lineup of panellists - Martin Wenzel, Raymond Tam, Ryan Moran, and Alexis Brayton - who shared their experiences navigating today's job market and building meaningful careers in biotech and pharma.
After reflecting on the discussions and the conversations we had throughout the night, here are 5 key takeaways from the evening:
1. Your network matters more than ever
A theme we heard loud and clear, both from the panel and from the personal stories shared in the room, is that your network is one of your most powerful tools right now.
The market is still slow-moving. Everyone feels it. And in times like this, the people who know you, trust you, and believe in you can make all the difference.
One of our own team members shared a real example from their experience. They were at the final stage with a candidate and ready to move to offer, when suddenly someone the hiring team had worked with in the past resurfaced, and the whole process shifted. It was a frustrating moment, but also a powerful reminder of how relationships influence hiring decisions, often in ways we can't predict.
As tough as this can be to hear, it reinforces a truth we've always believed in at Meet, telling people what you want, asking for help, and staying connected opens doors.
Building community is exactly what OUTBio is all about, and why this partnership means so much to us.
2. Be proactive about growing your circle
Another big takeaway was the encouragement to actively build your network, especially in a slower job climate. That means:
- Going to events like those OUTBio regularly hosts across the Bay Area
- Reconnecting with old colleagues
- Staying in touch with mentors and peers
- Showing up in the spaces where the community gathers
The job market may not be moving fast, but relationships can still move things forward. OUTBio hosts events throughout the year, giving people plenty of opportunities to get involved and stay connected.
3. Authenticity matters, but it should be your choice
One of the most meaningful conversations of the night centred on how "out" to be during interviews or early career stages. What we heard, and deeply agree with, is that you should be as authentic as feels right for you, not what you think employers expect.
And at the same time, remember that how companies respond to your authenticity tells you a lot about whether they're a place you'll want to stay.
Not every environment is equally supportive. While that reality can be frustrating, it's also important information. Interviews should be a two-way assessment. You deserve a workplace where you don't have to change who you are.
4. Use AI as a tool, not a replacement for your story
AI inevitably came up in the conversation, and we loved the balanced perspective the panel brought. Their advice mirrors our own experience working with candidates:
- AI can help you sharpen your CV
- It can help you organise your thoughts
- It can make your applications stronger
…but it shouldn't write your story for you.
Your lived experiences, your personality, and your narrative are what make you stand out. Technology should support that, not overshadow it. At Meet, we believe AI is here to help you, not replace you.
5. Don't try to be everything - find your niche
One of the most practical takeaways of the night was the reminder to stop trying to position yourself as an expert in everything. Job seekers often feel pressure to list every skill, cover every keyword, or present themselves as endlessly adaptable. But the panellists encouraged the opposite:
- Focus on what you're genuinely great at
- Tell a clear, cohesive story
- Lead with your strengths
- Don't dilute your value by trying to be all things at once
Quality wins over quantity, and clarity helps both hiring teams and candidates feel more confident.
