Beth Pugh’s Work Experience at Meet Life Sciences

3+ minutes

For a week in June, Meet was lucky to host fifteen-year-old Bethany Pugh (niece of our Growth Marketing Manager, Hannah Hussain) for some quality work experience.

She spent her time working with the Insights & Marketing (ISM) team, where she gained an understanding of content marketing and video creation, as well as some of the recent advancements and happenings in life sciences

Let’s hear about her time at Meet directly, including her key learnings and favorite moments

Favorite moment

Following a week of shadowing the ISM team and getting to know the people in our London office, we asked Beth what she enjoyed most about her work experience. She said that as well as witnessing office culture for the first time, everyone was really friendly and made me feel welcome, which boosted my confidence.

She also liked learning about how Meet Life Sciences helps match companies with the right people, contributing to their next job or careeras this was her first time understanding the world of recruitment. According to her, “it made me realize how important good communication is in a job.

New skills and learnings

With this being her first time in an office environment, there were plenty of new things for Beth to learn and experience. In Beth’s own words: I learned loads of new things like how to make graphics for social media and how to professionally write a blog post about a newly approved drug (Harliku) that I researched about. I also picked up important tips on writing a CV and going for interviews, thanks to a session with the L&D manager, which I know will help me in the future.

She also found talking to SVP and Co-Founder Alastair Shaw really interesting. He spoke about co-founding Meet, the wins and learnings of the last fifteen years and how this led to him leading our new executive search service line: Mx. It was a “really inspiring experience” that massively improved her understanding of the working world and provided some valuable advice to takeaway.

Stand-out task, session or conversation

Beth’s stand-out task involved writing a blog about a newly approved drug in Meet’s tone of voice. According to her, “it was really interesting to learn about an exciting new discovery in medicine and then explain it to an audience of life sciences professionals.

Because she didn’t know much about life sciences previously, learning and reading about its impact on global health was – although challenging at times – really fascinating. At the end of it, she felt very accomplished with her task and the fact she had learned about the industry.

Working environment and team support

Beth felt that the team environment was one of the best parts of her work experience. In her own lovely words: “They [The ISM team] were all so friendly and welcoming, which made it easier for me to learn and ask questions at any time.

“Everyone was helpful, especially when I was trying to do things for the first time. It felt like such a good place to work where people are so supportive and want you to do well and that made me feel so much more confident during the week.”

Any unexpected findings

We asked Beth if there was anything she hadn’t expected about working in a professional setting. For her, staying super organized and on track of multiple different things at once was something she noted.

“In the office everyone seemed really busy, which made me realize how important it is to manage your time properly.”

Beth also commented that she hadn’t realized the importance of teamwork and communicating with the people around her. It was clear that working in an office wasn’t just an individual activity – you’re always talking with your colleagues whether it’s a quick conversation or more of a sit-down meeting.

Recommending Meet to other students

Following her week of work experience at Meet, we were keen to know if she’d recommend our company to fellow students. Yes, I definitely would recommend work experience at Meet to other students. The team is really nice and helpful, so you don’t feel lost or nervous. You get to try and complete loads of different tasks, like making social media graphics, writing blogs, working on proposals, and even getting the chance to talk with senior people that run the company."

Overall, we were really glad to hear that Beth had a great time while learning some really useful skills for the future”.

While this isn’t strictly an instalment of our Talent Spotlight series, keep your eye out for the next one. We’ll be interviewing people from all across the company and we're looking forward to sharing their exciting stories and journeys!
