Our client, a full-service, privately owned healthcare communications agency with deep expertise in the rare disease space, is seeking an experienced Editorial Director to join and enhance their editorial leadership team. The agency specializes in medical communications, education and training, scientific content development, publications, MSL and medical affairs support, and strategic communications planning.

As Editorial Director you will be responsible for leading the internal editorial team, whilst managing freelance editors to ensure timely, accurate, and high-quality delivery of promotional medical communications. This role oversees editorial operations, enforces departmental procedures, and ensures projects align with industry standards and regulatory guidelines. The Editorial Director also plays a key role in team development, workflow optimization, and cross-departmental collaboration.

Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Management:
  • Oversee editorial workflow for a variety of promotional materials (e.g., slides, brochures, digital tools, mailings, websites, scripts, and regulatory documents).
  • Maintain and enforce editorial processes, quality standards, and timelines.
  • Collaborate with Project Management and Medical Services to allocate resources effectively and refine processes.
  • Manage departmental budget for freelance editorial support.
  • Supervise and mentor editorial staff; lead recruitment, onboarding, and retention efforts.
  • Ensure accurate time tracking for cost and resource assessments.

Internal & External Collaboration:
  • Participate in internal committees related to editorial services.
  • Build strong working relationships with Creative, Medical, and Project Management teams.
  • Communicate departmental updates, challenges, and needs to senior leadership.
  • Promote a collaborative and solutions-focused team culture.

Editorial Oversight:
  • Assign and review editorial work; provide feedback and direction.
  • Manage and evaluate freelance editors for quality and consistency.
  • Create and enforce client-, product-, and project-specific style guides.
  • Ensure all team members follow and understand style and branding guidelines.
  • Serve as the internal expert on copyright permissions and industry editorial standards.
  • Stay current with regulatory guidelines and best practices in promotional medical content.
  • Perform hands-on editorial tasks as needed to support team capacity.

Qualifications Required:
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 5–7 years of medical/pharmaceutical editing experience
  • 1–2 years of team management experience
  • 5+ years in a medical communications agency or pharmaceutical marketing setting
  • Strong leadership and team development skills
  • Excellent written and interpersonal communication
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Strategic thinker with a solutions-oriented mindset
  • Deep understanding of editorial standards, including AMA style and pharmaceutical regulations
  • High attention to detail and editorial accuracy
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Adobe Acrobat
  • Familiar with content management systems and electronic document review tools
